Spring Cleaning – Beyond the Basics

Stuffed bear on bed

With March upon us, we are getting ready to open the windows, dine al fresco and appreciate longer, sunnier days. Before we can truly enjoy all things Spring, we should all use the last days of bad weather to perform some Spring Cleaning. We’ve compiled a list of spring cleaning projects you should consider, all beyond the basics of wiping dust boards and cleaning windows. You will thank your future self if you tackle this list now and enjoy a shiny, beautiful, clean home for Summer.

Washer and Dryer – Typically, the main compartments of the washer and dryer are pretty clean on their own. However, the detergent holder and lint traps are another situation. These areas need a deep cleaning and it should be completed more than once a year. Mold will grow in the detergent holder, which can create a bad stench and the lint trap can be a fire hazard with too much buildup.

Oven and Fridge – These appliances rarely get the cleaning they deserve. Use Spring as the excuse to deep clean your oven and fridge. Throw away anything outdated in the fridge and remember to clean behind the fridge too. Dust bunnies galore!

Mattresses – Yes, you can clean your mattress. Its really easy, start by vacuuming the bare mattress with your upholstery attachment, then sprinkle the mattress with baking soda, let sit for up to 24 hours, then vacuum the mattress again. Oh, and don’t forget to flip the mattress too!

Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures – Unless you are a fastidious home owner, you don’t clean out your ceiling mounted fans and lights very often. Now is the time, get out the ladder and get ready for dust, dead bugs and general yuckiness. Once you see what is up there, you just might be motivated to clean them more often.

Replace all your Air Filters – This one is super important! If you do nothing else when spring cleaning, do this one. Change all of the air filters for your heating/ac system. It’s a quick trip to the home improvement store and only 10-30 minutes depending on how many filters you have. We recommend writing the date you switched the filters right on the filters so you know when change them again.  Better yet, set a calendar reminder in your phone for 3 months and change them again then.

Outdoor Grill – This is a fun one because it will have you dreaming of backyard BBQs. We love the outdoor magic eraser products for the stainless steel section of a grill and a good soak and scrub for the grill plates will do wonders.

Whether you are looking to sell your home or have no plans to move, Spring Cleaning is a great way to freshen up your house and prepare for a great year ahead. Happy cleaning!
